Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was denied permission by the Darbhanga district administration to interact with Dalit students at the Ambedkar Hostel on Thursday, 15 May. The Congress alleged that this decision was a "repressive measure" taken at the behest of Bihar’s ruling JD(U)-BJP alliance. No official reason is provided by the administration for the denial of permission. A letter from the district welfare officer informed the organizers that permission for the student dialogue program, part of the statewide "Shiksha Nyay Samvad" outreach, would not be granted. The Congress claimed the move was politically motivated, aiming to stifle discussions on education and social justice.

The controversy generated a strong reaction from the opposition. Congress Legislature Party leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan claimed that the preparations at the earlier point were done, but the authorities allegedly banned the students of the adjacent districts from joining the event. The Congress also emphasized the fact that Rahul Gandhi has a large base in deprived communities.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav gave support to Rahul Gandhi, who was lashing out at what he said were the NDA government’s oppressive tactics. The incident has highly charged the political tussle in Bihar as the Congress prepares for a showdown and reiterates its mandate for social justice and rights to education.

Rahul Gandhi Denied Permission

After the permission was denied, the Congress objected to the administration’s decision and claimed that the event would be held at their preferred venue. However, late on Wednesday night, the administration of the university allowed the program to be conducted at the Town Hall instead of the Ambedkar Hostel. This incident has taken place amid the heightened political climate ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly elections, where every move by parties is being closely watched and debated. The Congress alleged that the administration’s initial denial was a politically motivated attempt to disrupt opposition mobilization during this crucial pre-election period. The head of Congress leaders, AICC national media convenor Abhay Dubey, also took a swipe at the government, saying it politicized an issue that deserved to sensitize people on students’ rights and social justice. Nevertheless, the party remained undeterred and asked the administration to reconsider and hold out hope that “good sense will prevail.” Opposition leaders argue that such incidents reflect the growing pressure on democratic rights as election day approaches.
