Vijay, the Tamil superstar and founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to meet the protesters opposing the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport on Monday at 1 p.m. The meeting, which was initially planned for an open ground, will now be held in a wedding hall in Parandur due to restrictions from local authorities and overnight rainfall. The change of venue highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the protesters.
Vijay’s Support to the Protesters
Vijay’s involvement in the protests against the Parandur Greenfield Airport project is seen as a significant show of solidarity for the residents and farmers affected by the plan. The airport project, which has been under discussion since August 2022, has sparked widespread opposition. Locals argue that the construction will lead to the destruction of valuable agricultural land and eco-sensitive water bodies.
Environmental Concerns and Prolonged Protests
The proposed airport would span over 5,746 acres across 20 villages, including Ekanapuram, one of the largest affected villages. The protesters, who have been demonstrating for over 900 days, argue that the project poses a severe threat to local ecosystems and their livelihoods. Villagers fear the loss of fertile farmland and environmental damage, leading them to vow they will continue their protests until the project is canceled.
Political and Police Restrictions on the Protest
While the protests have gained momentum, the authorities have imposed significant restrictions. Police barricades and vehicle checks have limited access to the protesting villages, preventing outside participation. Several political organisations, including the BJP, PMK, and Arappor Iyakkam, have had their protest permissions denied. However, Vijay's visit is expected to increase media attention on the issue and strengthen public and political support for the protesters' cause.
