The Punjab Cabinet has recently given the green light to the Sports Policy-2023, a comprehensive plan aimed at promoting sports within the state. This strategic blueprint focuses on several key areas to foster athletic talent and success, starting right from the grassroots level in villages.
One of the policy’s primary objectives is to build a robust sports infrastructure that follows a pyramidal structure, encompassing village, cluster, district, and state levels. At the cluster level, there will be a strong emphasis on providing basic training and guidance in various sports and fitness activities. To achieve this, an adequate number of coaches and experts will be appointed to nurture young talents.
The focus extends beyond just physical infrastructure
A remarkable aspect of the policy is the plan to develop playgrounds within a 4-kilometer radius of every home, ensuring that sports facilities are easily accessible to all residents. The focus extends beyond just physical infrastructure; there will be increased training in locally popular games at the cluster level, professional coaching at the district level, and advanced training at the state level for those aspiring for excellence at national and international competitions.
The policy underscores the importance of identifying sporting talent at the grassroots level and providing scientific training to hone their skills. Special attention will be given to supporting para and specially-abled athletes, ensuring that they receive the necessary assistance to compete at national and international events.
Furthermore, the policy recognizes the significance of well-trained coaches in nurturing talent. It aims to provide opportunities for coaches to receive training at the national and international levels, thereby enhancing their expertise.
To elevate the status of sports and recognize outstanding sportspersons, the policy will offer rewards and job opportunities to those who achieve excellence in their respective fields. It also aims to engage the corporate sector in the development and management of sports, thus fostering partnerships for overall growth.
To facilitate efficient management and monitoring, an IT platform will be established to track and enhance the performance of players. This platform will bring together all stakeholders involved in sports promotion and management, ensuring a coordinated effort towards achieving the desired goals.
In addition, the state plans to host national and international competitions, games, and tournaments, showcasing Punjab’s sporting talent on a larger stage.
