World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: CM Yogi Adityanath Calls for Respect
In a message addressed to the people of the state, the Chief Minister expressed concern over the increasing number of elderly individuals living in isolation and the growing dependence on old-age homes. He noted that while many parents dedicate their lives to securing a better future for their children, they often find themselves alone during the later stages of life. He called upon society to recognize its responsibility toward the elderly and ensure that they receive the affection, support, and dignity they deserve.
Highlighting India’s cultural traditions
Highlighting India’s cultural traditions, Yogi Adityanath said that Sanatan values regard parents and teachers as embodiments of the divine. Referring to stories from Hindu scriptures, including those of Lord Ganesha, Shravan Kumar, and Lord Rama, he stressed that honoring and serving parents has long been considered a cornerstone of Indian civilization and family life.
The Chief Minister also outlined measures being undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh government to support senior citizens and vulnerable women. He noted that the state has decided to provide a monthly pension of ₹1,500 to elderly persons and destitute women. In addition, eligible beneficiaries will be linked to health insurance schemes such as Ayushman Bharat and the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana, while also being provided access to housing benefits under government welfare programmes.
Encouraging senior citizens to prioritize their physical and mental well-being, Yogi Adityanath urged them to adopt yoga as part of their daily routine. He pointed out that the theme of International Yoga Day 2026, to be observed on June 21, is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” describing it as a global commitment to promoting the health, dignity, and well-being of older generations.
The Chief Minister concluded by expressing gratitude to senior citizens for their contributions to families, society, and the nation, while calling on younger generations to preserve the values of respect and care that form the foundation of India’s cultural heritage.
