Bawaal Review: Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan Lost in a Tiresome Tale!

The recently launched film ‘Bawaal‘ tries to intertwine an array of unrelated themes, which results in a perplexing medley that leaves viewers scratching their heads. Nitesh Tiwari, the man behind the brilliant ‘Dangal’, sadly appears to have missed the mark with this new release. Bawaal, intended to be a love story, anti-war appeal, and commentary on spurious narratives, seems to unravel rather than connect these elements.

A Convoluted Narrative: Mixing History with Modern Marital Struggles

‘Bawaal’, an Amazon Prime release, focuses on an ineffectual history teacher in Lucknow and his estranged wife, touring World War II locations amidst their failing marriage. The plot struggles to establish a reasonable connection between the common struggle of marital discord and the gruesome history of Hitler’s concentration camps, leaving viewers puzzled.

The Woes of a Lacklustre Plot: Bawaal Struggles to Find its Footing

The film, credited to Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and a team of four screenwriters, attempts to balance a critique of warfare with the emotional upheaval of a turbulent marriage. However, the shaky script and uninspiring delivery result in an unconvincing comparison that leans towards manipulation rather than impactful storytelling.

Performances Overshadowed: Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan Amidst the Turmoil

Despite their evident enthusiasm, leads Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan seem trapped within the chaotic plot, struggling to elevate their performances above the tumult. Bawaal, while appearing to offer sage advice about contentment and war, seems to flounder in its execution, reducing the impact of the actors’ performances.

Ultimately, ‘Bawaal’ emerges as a disillusioning attempt at blending historical reflections with contemporary relational issues. The film’s overambitious storyline drowns the earnest efforts of Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, causing it to land far short of expectations. The attempt to use historical atrocities to underscore modern concerns, while intriguing, fails to hit home, making ‘Bawaal’ a perplexing watch.
