The trailer of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has finally dropped after much delay. Starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in lead roles, the film brings back the flavour of classic 90s family entertainers with romance, comedy, drama and relationship chaos packed together.

Directed by David Dhawan and produced by Ramesh Taurani, the film is already drawing comparisons with Biwi No 1. From the music to the storyline, several moments in the trailer remind viewers of the Salman Khan-starrer cult comedy.

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Trailer OUT

The trailer opens with familiar songs like “Chunari Chunari” and “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.” In the film, Varun Dhawan plays Jass, a married man whose relationship with his wife Bani (played by Mrunal Thakur) begins to fall apart due to differences over family planning and life choices. Things get more complicated when Jass moves abroad and falls in love with Preet (played by Pooja Hegde).

However, what starts as a fresh romantic chapter soon turns into complete chaos after Bani unexpectedly returns to his life — this time while pregnant. The trailer hints that Jass tries to hide his new relationship from his estranged wife, setting up a messy emotional conflict similar to Biwi No 1.

The film also stars Mouni Roy, Jimmy Shergill, Chunky Panday and Maniesh Paul in supporting roles.

Soon after the trailer release, social media users began pointing out similarities between Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and Biwi No 1. Many viewers feel the new film follows the same formula of a married man juggling between his wife and another woman.

While Biwi No 1 became a massive blockbuster because of its comedy and music, many modern viewers now see its storyline differently. The idea of a man abandoning his family for another relationship has become more controversial with changing audience sensibilities.

Still, the trailer of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai appears to lean heavily into nostalgia. The makers seem to be targeting audiences who grew up watching David Dhawan-style entertainers filled with confusion, humour, dramatic twists and catchy songs.

Trailer Of Varun Dhawan Starrer Released Amid Legal Controversy

The film is also making headlines because of an ongoing legal dispute involving Biwi No 1 producer Vashu Bhagnani. Bhagnani has reportedly filed a lawsuit against David Dhawan and Tips Films over the alleged use of scenes and songs from Biwi No 1 without proper authorisation.

According to Bhagnani, Dhawan had originally promised to work with him again before partnering with another production house for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.

Speaking about the issue during a recent press conference, Bhagnani said, “The judge has categorically said – Share the script and the film. If you have used Vashu Bhagnani’s songs, please remove it. They should remove the songs and release the film. Mujhe kisi ka nuksaan nahin karna hai. We haven’t made an appeal in court to stop their film’s release.”

He further added, “I told them – Share the script. In case you haven’t made a film similar to Biwi No 1, you’re most welcome to release the film. We are not here to do any extortion with anybody. Just don’t use my songs and my script. Hamari ladayi sirf ethics ki hai. In case they haven’t used any material from my film, I’ll apologise and back off.”

Reports suggest the court has now asked the makers to submit the script of HJTIHH to determine whether the similarities go beyond inspiration.

Will Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Work At The Box Office?

Even before its release, the film has generated mixed reactions online. While some viewers are excited about the nostalgic David Dhawan-style comedy, others believe the storyline feels outdated for modern audiences.

Still, with Varun Dhawan leading the film and the soundtrack already creating buzz, the film has managed to grab attention. Whether the nostalgia factor translates into box office success will become clear once the film hits theatres. Judging from the response, it is more likely to tank at the box office.
