Lyricist Javed Akhtar stirred strong reactions after saying he would choose hell over Pakistan. Speaking at a Shiv Sena (UBT) event in Mumbai, Akhtar talked about facing criticism from both sides.

Some trolls tell him to go to hell, while others ask him to go to Pakistan. He said, “If I only have a choice of going either to hell or to Pakistan, I would rather like to go to hell.” His words got mixed applause and laughter from the crowd.

At the event, Akhtar also shared how he faces abuse from both Hindu and Muslim communities. He shared, “People from both sides abuse me. One calls me a Kaafir (infidel), saying that I will go to hell. The other calls me a Jihadi, asking me to go to Pakistan.”

However, he admitted that not all feedback is negative. He added, “Many support me, praise me, and encourage me.”

Netizens React

Despite this, netizens largely remained unmoved by Akhtar’s statement. Some fans defended him and called him a “living legend” who is unfairly targeted online. But many others called him a hypocrite, reminding people of his multiple visits to Pakistan.

One user wrote, “I wish he stands by his words, as he has already visited #pakistan more than once... he was given due respect & hospitality as guest but unfortunately, to prove himself more patriotic he has to spit this venom.”

Another comment said, “Ye bhi Pakistan ka trip karte rahe hai.” Someone else added, “Hypocrisy had face has to be this duffer. He already visited Pakistan in past. So by his logic he should have gone to hell already.”

Others accused Akhtar of speaking without sincerity. “Ye bol nahi paa raha hai apne dil ki baat bas ishliye b******i kar raha hai.”

Yet some expressed sympathy for the lyricist. “I feel so bad when he gets hateful tweets under his tweets from absolutely worthless people. He is a living legend but people in our society don't value legends while they are alive. Only after their death they realise what we have lost.”

Akhtar’s comments come amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan. The conflict escalated after India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan following a deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
