Indian Idol 16 turned emotional this week as the show paid tribute to the late Assamese music icon, Zubeen Garg. The latest promo featured a special performance of his hit song “Mayabini” and left viewers moved. Fans quickly shared the moment on social media, showing how much Garg’s music meant to them.

Zubeen Garg Gets Emotional Tribute In Indian Idol 16 Promo

Singer Shreya Ghoshal joined contestant Satyendra Yein to perform “Mayabini” and created a touching homage to Garg’s legacy. In the promo, judge Vishal Dadlani praised the singer by calling him the “greatest of all time.” Dadlani also performed “Jane Kya” from the film Pyaar Ke Side Effects to pay tribute to the late singer.

Since Zubeen Garg’s sudden death on September 19 during a sea outing near Singapore’s St John’s Island, Mayabini has become a song of mourning across Assam and beyond. It has been played at homes, public events and on social media. The lyrics “Nijanor gaan morXekh hobo bhabotumar bukut” mean “My song of loneliness will end, I believe, at your heart.”

Zubeen had once shared in 2019 that Mayabini was very close to him. He had said, “This song [Mayabini] is a fantasy for me. When I die, this is the song that will play.” The recent performances on Indian Idol 16 brought his wish to life.

About Zubeen Garg Death Case

The circumstances of Garg’s death are still under investigation. Five people (including his cousin Sandipan Garg, manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta) are currently in police custody in connection with the case.

Udit Narayan To Return As Judge In Indian Idol 16?

Adding to the excitement, there are rumours that veteran singer Udit Narayan may return as a judge on Indian Idol 16. Narayan previously served as a judge on Season 3 in 2007. If confirmed, his presence could bring nostalgia for viewers, especially with the show’s theme, Yaadon Ki Playlist.

Indian Idol 16 is set to premiere on October 18, replacing the reality show Super Dancer on Sony TV.
