Karuppu Box Office Collection Day 1: Suriya and Trisha Krishnan starrer much-awaited film Karuppu finally made it to theatres on May 15 after facing delays, financial disputes and last-minute release chaos. The courtroom action drama opened to strong fan celebrations and steady footfalls across Tamil Nadu. Despite the hurdles before release, the film managed a respectable start at the box office.

Karuppu Box Office Collection Day 1

On its opening day, Karuppu box office collection stood at Rs 14.40 crore nett in India. The film recorded an overall occupancy of 50.35% across 4,891 shows. While morning shows began on a softer note at 24.54%, collections improved throughout the day, with night shows peaking at 75.15% occupancy. Overseas markets added around Rs 4 crore, pushing the worldwide total to Rs 20.66 crore on Day 1.

The performance of Karuppu showed a clear upward trend as the day progressed. Afternoon and evening shows saw rising audience turnout, indicating strong interest among fans despite mixed pre-release challenges.

However, the film’s debut still falls short when compared to Suriya’s previous big openers. It could not surpass the actor’s Kanguva, which had earned Rs 22 crore nett on Day 1 in India. It also trails behind his earlier release Retro, which opened at around Rs 19 crore nett.

Karuppu Falls Short Of Suriya’s Peak Opening Records

Even though Karuppu has delivered one of Suriya’s better recent openings, there’s a noticeable gap from his peak box office performances. The film had high expectations due to its unique concept, strong pre-release buzz and reunion of Suriya and Trisha after nearly two decades.

Despite that, the opening numbers suggest a moderate response rather than a blockbuster start. Its weekend performance will be crucial in deciding whether the film can build momentum.

Before its theatrical release, Karuppu went through multiple challenges, including a delayed premiere due to financial disagreements and withheld digital keys. Reports of unpaid dues and piracy leaks further complicated the release situation.

Although the issues were resolved just in time for its global launch, the controversies may have slightly affected its opening-day momentum in certain regions.

About The Film

Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu is a Tamil courtroom action drama inspired by folklore. The story follows a divine transformation where Lord Karuppu takes human form as lawyer Saravanan to fight corruption in the justice system. The film blends mythology with commercial action, set against a rural courtroom backdrop.

The movie features Suriya in a powerful dual-shaded role, alongside Trisha Krishnan, Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada and Yogi Babu. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film was made on an estimated budget of ₹130–140 crore and runs for 152 minutes. With strong visuals and music by Sai Abhyankkar, the film now looks toward its weekend trend to strengthen its box office run.
