Five heroines refused to climb on the train before Chaiyya Chaiyya went to Malaika

Chaiya Chaiya: Malaika Arora was the last choice for the song Chaiya Chaiya filmed with Shahrukh Khan dancing atop a train. It was offered to Shilpa Shirodkar, Shilpa Shetty and 2-3 other people. In the end the Dil Se song, which was released in 1998 went to Malaika Arora, and rest, as they say, is history.

In a recent interview, Shilpa Shirodkar said that “Chaiyya Chaiyya” came to her but she was not finalised for it. She said, “I was considered for Chaiyya Chaiyya. But apparently, they thought I was too fat so they offered it to Malaika.”

All about ‘destiny’

Though she was quite at losing the opportunity to share the screen with SRK, the 90s star believes everything is about ‘destiny’. Shilpa is known for films such as Hum, Khuda Gawah and Gopi Kishan.

Though Shilpa was ‘disappointed’ that she couldn’t dance with Shah Rukh on “Chaiyya Chaiyya” which later on became a chartbuster, she did get a chance to work with SRK in Gaja Gamini. Even though it was one scene, she thought it was a “dream come true”.

‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ was shot on a moving train on the railway track between Ooty and Coonoor. Farah Khan choreographed the song and said shooting the song was a “fab experience”. Composed by AR Rahman and sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi, the song was written by Gulzar.

‘Malaika was nowhere on the radar’

Farah Khan, who appears in the first episode of Malaika Arora’s Disney Plus Hostar show, Moving In With Malaika, has also revealed that 4-5 names were considered for the song. Not only Shilpa Shirodkar, the makers even thought of Shilpa Shetty for the song. In the show Farah tells Malaika,  “You’re the Chaiyya Chaiyya girl. But luckily for you, some five heroines had refused to climb on the train. Malaika was nowhere on the radar. We approached Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Shilpa Shirodkar, and 2-3 other people.”

Shilpa Shirodkar rose to fame in the late 80s and 90s. But she faded into oblivion after her marriage in the 2000. She made her comeback to acting with some daily soaps on television.
