Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is known for telling powerful, socially relevant stories. Films like Mulk, Thappad and Bheed sparked debate and reflection. Now, ahead of his next release Assi, Sinha is once again discussing cinema’s ability to shape society. As always, he didn’t hesitate to praise superstar Shah Rukh Khan while talking about it.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Sinha shared his thoughts on whether films can truly bring change. His response was honest and thoughtful. “Change can’t be quantified,” he said. According to the director, change is slow. It often happens quietly, without dramatic moments.
However, Sinha also pointed out that films are not the only influence. He believes that film stars can also shift attitudes and behaviour.
Shah Rukh Khan Changed Heroes Forever?
While talking about subtle cultural changes, Sinha highlighted superstar Shah Rukh Khan. He recalled noticing a difference in how heroes behaved on screen after Khan became a major star.
He said, “Before Shah Rukh Khan became the star that he is, I never saw a hero run down the steps to give the lady a hand to climb up. I never saw an actor do that.”
Sinha believes Khan’s consistent courtesy helped normalise respectful gestures. Over time, actions like offering a hand or opening doors became more visible. He said, “That is such aspirational conduct that now, you see it very often. Now, that’s a change. People are opening doors for women. Shah Rukh Khan is single-handedly responsible for this chivalry.”
DON'T MISS
The director explained that even small actions can have a big impact. Importantly, he added that change does not always require grand efforts. He added, “So, change is not that difficult an entity. Keep doing the right things. Change happens in so many ways.”
Interestingly, Khan’s gestures of respect are not limited to performances. In 2018, he chose to list his female co-stars’ names before his own in film credits. The move drew praise and started conversations about equality. Khan has continued this practice.
Anubhav Sinha and Shah Rukh Khan share a creative connection. Sinha directed Khan in Ra.One, released in 2011. The film also starred Arjun Rampal and Kareena Kapoor.
Although Ra.One was not a major box office success at the time, but its perception changed. Over the years, audiences appreciated its visual effects and ambition. Today, it enjoys a cult following.
Anubhav Sinha’s Next Is Assi
Now, Sinha returns with Assi, a hard-hitting courtroom drama. The film stars Taapsee Pannu as Raavi, a fearless lawyer. Kani Kusruti plays Parima, a survivor of a brutal gang rape seeking justice.
The story follows Parima’s difficult fight within a system marked by apathy and patriarchy. Raavi leads the legal battle, determined to uncover the truth despite the lack of direct evidence and DNA matches.
The film features a strong supporting cast, including Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as Parima’s supportive husband. Revathy appears as a firm judge. Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak play the accused’s parents. The film also includes a special appearance by Naseeruddin Shah.
Notably, Assi uses a “breaking the fourth wall” technique. The narrative highlights disturbing national statistics, reminding viewers that a sexual assault is reported in India every 20 minutes.Produced by T-Series, Assi releases in theatres on February 20.
