The Kerala Story 2: ‘Cannot Rely On Newspaper Reports….’ National Award Winner Sudipto Sen Shares Why He Declined to Direct, Check

The Kerala Story 2 faces fresh attention as National Award-winning director Sudipto Sen reveals why he refused to helm the sequel. Citing a lack of deep research and reliance on newspaper reports, he stressed the need for factual rigour on sensitive topics, as reported by India Today.

The Kerala Story 2: Sudipto Sen, who has won a National Award for The Kerala Story, has decided not to direct The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond. India Today was the first to report the news, which has led to more discussion about the movie.

Sen was clear that his choice had nothing to do with him personally. It looked like a business. The director said he couldn’t work on the project until he did as much study as he did on the first movie.

“Cannot Trust Newspaper Reports”

Sudipto Sen is said to have said that he can’t depend on “newspaper reports or WhatsApp forwards” to explain his position when dealing with a sensitive subject. He said that he had been studying The Kerala Story for almost ten years. Because he had done so much research, he could stand by every scene and support the movie even when it was being criticised.

But the movie goes beyond Kerala and tells stories from a wider range of places. Sen said that the information that was given did not meet his standards for how deep the facts were.

He thinks that films that deal with serious problems need long-term, on-the-ground investigations instead of quick paperwork.

The Kerala Story’s Legacy of Awards

The Kerala Story 2: At the 2025 National Awards, Sudipto Sen won the award for Best Director for The Kerala Story. The movie got Best Cinematography as well, even though it was criticised politically and socially for its theme of radicalisation.

The sequel is now being made by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh. The movie is set to come out on February 27, 2026.

Sudipto Sen’s choice brings up a bigger problem: how responsible filmmakers should be when dealing with sensitive stories.
