The Night Manager review: Anil Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur pack a punch in desi adaptation of popular BBC series

The Night Manager Review: The Night Manager is a sincere and ambitious adaptation of the popular BBC series of the same name. It tries to match the standards of the original version but falls short mainly because of mediocre writing. Buy even then it can not be called a wasted effort by any stretch of the imagination.

The Night Manager is the story of an ex-navy Lieutenant Shaan Senguta (Aditya Roy Kapur), who works as the night manager of a hotel. His world is turned upside down when he learns a dark secret about Shelly (Anil Kapoor), an influential business tycoon. The stage is set for a twisted and dangerous game of cat and mouse as he vows to bring down his seemingly invincible foe.

Compelling storyline, strong characters

The compelling storyline is adapted well to suit Indian sensibilities. References to ‘Raavan’ and ‘Lanka’ give The Night manager a distinct desi flavor.

Strong performances and an admittedly engaging plot ensure that The Night Manager finds a spot at the top of Hotstar’s heap of Hindi-language remakes.

The opening tries to build an aura around Aditya’s character in the fight sequence. The show then moves at its own pace. However, it loses its steam from the second episode onwards. Several inherently intriguing sequences fail to pack a punch. The kidnapping sequence is perhaps the weakest of the lot. It lacks the intensity needed to make an impact.

Anil and Aditya are the show’s backbone

Anil Kapoor and Aditya are the show’s backbone but comparisons are bound to follow. They lack the intensity of Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in the original. Tillotoma Shome is a treat to watch. Her cool body language in a scene where she is accused of misappropriation of funds is a treat to watch.

Sobhita Dhulipala does not get much scope but you feel her presence nonetheless. Her alluring glances and silences build a sense of mystery surrounding her character. Her scenes with Aditya pack a punch mainly because of the tension between the characters.

The Night Manager ends with a twist as Shelly makes Shaan a lucrative offer. While the scene does not stand on its own, it highlights the changing dynamics between the characters and setting the stage for the second part.
