42,640 new Covid-19 cases in las 24-hour lowest in India since March 23

Maintaining the steady decline, India logged in 42,640 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the lowest since March 23, according to data released by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry. On March 23, India had recorded 47,262 cases.

The overall tally of Covid-19 cases in the country now stands at 2,99,77,861 while death toll was reported at 3,89,302. The number of active cases in the country is now 6.62 lakh, less than seven lakh after 79 days.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, on Monday reported 6,270 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state’s tally to 59.79 lakh. After Black Fungus, the state is now grapling with the fear of Delta variants as 21 new cases of the newly found strain were reported.

After Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have the highest number of infections.

Meanwhile, Delhi on Monday reported 89 cases and 11 deaths, lowest daily since April last year. The positivity rate dipped to 0.16 per cent, the lowest since the beginning of the pandemic.

A total of 81,839 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the total discharge to 2,89,26,038 till date, according to the Union Health Ministry.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 39,40,72,142 samples have been tested up to June 21 for Covid-19. Of these 16,64,360 samples were tested on Monday.

Meanwhile, the overall global Covid-19 caseload reached past 178.6 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3.87 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
