Abortion pill Side Effects: Abortion pills such as Mifepristone and Misoprostol are often trusted for offering a non-surgical choice for the termination of an early pregnancy. However, they do come with significant risks if not handled with due care and diligence.

In a video shared on Instagram, Dr. Priyanka (Obstetrician & Gynaecologist) shares her expert opinion about these two abortion pills.

When And How Abortion Pills Should Be Taken?

Abortion Pills could be used up to 9-11 weeks of pregnancy, confirmed by ultrasound. Medical practitioners usually recommend Mifepristone (200 mg orally), which blocks progesterone to halt pregnancy growth. It is generally followed 24-48 hours later by Misoprostol (800 mcg, buccally, vaginally or orally) to induce contractions and expel tissue.

Never Skip Doctor’s Advice Or Self-Prescribe

Before consuming any abortion pill, you should always consult a professional Obstetrician & Gynaecologist. This is primarily because you may inadvertently end up misjudging gestational age or miss out on contraindications such as ectopic pregnancy, which can result in severe health outcomes.

In acute cases, self-use could result in excessive haemorrhage and undetected ectopic ruptures requiring emergency surgery.

Side Effects And Risks Of Abortion Pills

The abuse or overdosing of abortion pills could lead to side effects such as fever, chills, nausea or diarrhea. It may also result in prolonged bleeding, organ damage or sepsis. Infections such as Clostridium sordellii may also be a rare possibility.

When To Contact A Doctor Immediately?

You should immediately seek medical help if you experience severe pain that is unresponsive to medications, fever above 100.4°F lasting more than 24 hours, foul-smelling discharge, dizziness or no bleeding 24 hours post-Misoprostol.
