Covid update: With 4.14 new cases, India’s tally rises past 2.14 crore

India has logged in 4,14,188 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours — the highest so far, taking the total number of cases in the country to 2,14,91,598, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Friday. In the same time, the country also reported 3,915 fatalities, pushing the overall fatality toll to 2,34,083.

This is for the third time since May1 that the country has reported over 4 lakh cases. It is the 15th straight day when India recorded more than three lakh cases while over 3,000 casualties have been reported for the last nine days.

India’s total tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,14,91,598 with 36,45,164 active cases and a total of 2,34,083 deaths, so far. Meanwhile, a total of 3,31,507 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 29,86,01,699 samples have been tested up to Thursday (May 6) for Covid-19. Of these 18,26,490 samples were tested on Thursday.

Here’s some more updates:

*The Health Ministry said that a total of 16,49,73,058 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 23,70,298, who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.

* A Covid-19 vaccine developed by the US-based biotechnology company Novavax has been found effective against Coronavirus’ B1351 variant, first identified in South Africa, results of a trial have shown.

* Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying his government’s lack of a clear and coherent Covid and vaccination strategy.

*The Rajasthan government on Thursday announced a complete lockdown from 5 a.m. on May 10 to 5 a.m. on May 24 amid the surge in coronavirus cases.

*Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa Friday held a review meeting with ministers and senior government officials to review measures taken to mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 in the state. 

*The genome sequencing of the Covid 19 virus in circulation in Karnataka in the second wave since March has revealed that the double mutant Maharashtra strain (B.1.617) and UK variant (B.1.1.7) have virtually obliterated the previous strain dominant in the state (B.1.36.29).
