Chapped Lips: Tired of chapped, inflammed and dry lips even after regular lip balm use? For decades, the standard advice has been to apply more moisturizer. However, the real problem is not the product you have been using all these years to treat chapped lips, but what’s happening inside your digestive tract.

Chapped or inflammed lips could be possible signs of health conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), nutrient malabsorption or chronic inflammation.

The Gut-Skin Connection

The connection between your skin and gut is more than just a biological reality that is medically referred to as the gut-skin axis. An imbalance in the gut microbiome (dysbiosia) could possibly trigger systemic inflammation that manifests physically on your skin, including the delicate mucous membranes of the lips.

If your gut has been compromised (leaky gut), your bloodstream could get attacked by toxic by-products and inflammatory cytokine that may cause inflammation.

Tips & Precautions

  • Reduce the intake of inflammatory foods (such as White bread, white rice, crackers, Bacon, ham, hot dogs, sweet tea and sports drinks) that feed bad bacteria.
  • Add specific probiotics, zinc or B-vitamins (especially B2, B12 and folic acid), under medical supervision.
  • Consult a functional medicine practitioner who can order specific tests (like a breath test for SIBO) to identify the root cause.

Natural Ways To Treat Chapped Lips

You could also consider adding 1-2 tablespoons of desi ghee to your daily meals. Alternatively, you could mix a little ghee in lukewarm water and consume it first thing in the morning. You could even consider sipping on Poppy seeds (khas khas) or fennel (saunf) water throughout the day to get rid of chapped or inflammed lips.
