Danish pharma company Novo Nordisk has slashed the price of its weight loss drug, Wegovy, in India. The once-a-week injection for weight management is now much more affordable. But many are asking if it’s completely safe to use.

Wegovy Price Cut Details

Novo Nordisk has announced a big price drop across all dose levels. The highest dose (2.4 mg) now costs around Rs 16,400 per month, down from Rs 24,389. The lowest dose (0.25 mg) is priced at about Rs 10,850, compared to the earlier Rs 16,260.

The company said the move aims to help more people living with obesity or being overweight. Novo Nordisk’s India head said the new price reflects their goal to offer effective, safe, and sustainable treatment options for Indian patients.

How Safe Is This Weight Loss Drug?

Experts say Wegovy is effective but not risk-free. The drug belongs to a group called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It contains semaglutide, a compound that helps reduce appetite. Studies show that people can lose about 15–20% of their weight with Wegovy when combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

However, doctors warn against using it without medical guidance. Some studies have linked misuse to serious side effects like pancreatitis, gallbladder issues and stomach paralysis. Medical experts advise strict monitoring and supervision while using it.

PointDetails
ApprovalWegovy is approved for chronic weight management when combined with lifestyle changes.
AffordabilityThe price cut makes the drug more accessible, but affordability isn’t the only factor to consider.
SafetyMedical supervision is essential, especially for those with thyroid or digestive health issues.
ResultsWeight loss results are promising but not guaranteed; maintaining progress requires ongoing effort.

If you plan to take Wegovy, remember that it’s meant for long-term weight management, not quick fixes. You’ll still need a proper diet, exercise and regular check-ups.

The price cut is good news, but safety comes first. Wegovy can work wonders for some people under medical supervision. However, when used incorrectly, it can do more harm than good.
