Yogi govt announces free vaccination for those above 18 years

Uttar Pradesh will now offer free Covid vaccine free of cost from May 1, as India’s expands its covid-19 vaccination progamme, making people above aged 18 eligible to administer the vaccine doses.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by the UP CM. The meeting also saw presence of other cabinet ministers.

Adityanath tweeted: “In the cabinet meeting it has been decided that corona virus vaccination of all the people above 18 years of age in Uttar Pradesh will be made free… Coronavirus will lose, India will win.”

To monitor the situation, the state government has formed a team 11 which will monitor the covid-19 situation in the country.

“We have to increase vaccination centres and create a database of the target age-group,” the chief minister said in a statement.

India on Monday announced that the covid-19 vaccine can now be administered to people above the age of 18. Currently, only people over 45 are eligible. The centre had also said that states could now buy doses directly from manufacturers – up to 50 per cent of their supply – at a ‘pre-agreed price’. This comes amid the nationwide scarcity of the vaccine doses.

Uttar Pradesh is India’s second worst affected state with currently two lakh active coronavirus cases. New cases have seen a frightening spike since March 31, when 918 cases were reported. On Tuesday, nearly 30,000 new cases were detected.
