Raksha Bandhan 2023: Embrace the day of sibling love; Know shubh muhurat, how to celebrate and what to avoid!

Raksha Bandhan 2023: Raksha Bandhan, a prominent Hindu festival, holds immense significance as it celebrates the unique relationship between brothers and sisters. The holy thread, known as Rakhi, is an embodiment of protection, and the festival takes place on Shravan Purnima. On this day, sisters tie Rakhis around their brothers’ wrists, signifying their promise to protect them throughout their lives.

Dates and Muhurat

This year, there have been confusion regarding on which day Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated. It is known that the festival will take place on both 30th and 31st of August. But it is advised to not tie rakhi during the night 30th and morning of the 31st. The Bhadra period is inauspicious for any festive or auspicious activities. The Bhadra Kala begins on the 30th of August with the onset of Shravana month and continues until 02 minutes past 9 PM on the same day. It’s important to note that the auspicious time for tying Rakhi will be after this period.

The ideal time for tying Rakhi falls during daytime. However, it’s important to be mindful of the Bhadra Kala. On the 31st of August, Shravana Purnima, an auspicious time for tying Rakhi is till 7:05 AM, ensuring that it falls outside the Bhadra period. This is the most favorable time for the ritual.

Dos and Don’ts

As you gear up for Raksha Bandhan, here are some important guidelines to keep in mind:

  1. Choose an auspicious time to tie the Rakhi to your brother.
  2. While tying Rakhi, make sure your brother’s face is not towards the south. The southern direction is associated with Yama, the god of death, and is considered inauspicious.
  3. You can use chandan (sandalwood paste) or roli (vermilion) to apply a tilak on your brother’s forehead before tying the Rakhi.
  4. Ensure that the akshat (unbroken rice) offered during the ritual is not broken.
  5. When performing the aarti for your brother, make sure that the diya (lamp) in the thali (plate) is intact and not damaged.
  6. While performing the aarti, use ghee to light the diya. Lighting a ghee lamp removes negative energies.

Celebrate the sibling bond

As the joyous festival of Raksha Bandhan approaches, remember to rise early, take a cleansing bath, and offer your prayers to the Sun God. Afterward, visit a nearby temple or your home’s altar to perform the puja (ritual) and adorn your brother’s wrist with the Rakhi. Prioritize the rituals and customs associated with the festival to ensure an auspicious and blessed Raksha Bandhan.
