Uniform Civil Code by 2029
The Uniform Civil Code seeks to establish a common set of personal laws governing areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, irrespective of an individual’s religion. The subject has remained a major political and legal issue in India.
The Home Minister’s statement indicates that the NDA intends to push ahead with the implementation of the UCC across more states during the current political cycle. Several BJP-led states have already taken steps towards introducing or examining a common civil code.
The issue gained renewed attention after Uttarakhand became the first state in independent India to implement a Uniform Civil Code. The state’s UCC came into effect in 2025, covering various aspects of personal and family law.
Shah has repeatedly maintained that the UCC is intended to ensure equality before the law and eliminate differences in personal laws based on religion. Supporters of the proposal argue that a common framework would promote equal rights, while critics have raised concerns regarding its implications for religious and customary practices.
