Another Storm in the Making! Congress Leader Anand Sharma Opposes Rahul Gandhi’s Proposal of Caste Census

Congress Leader Anand Sharma's Letter Raises Doubts on Caste Census Proposal

In a recent development, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma expressed his concerns regarding the party’s push for a nationwide caste census. He warned that this demand might be seen as a departure from the principles upheld by former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, potentially disrespecting their legacy.

Concerns Over Misinterpretation

Sharma, a key member of the G-23 faction within the Congress, conveyed his apprehensions in a letter addressed to party chief Mallikarjun Kharge. He emphasized that while the caste census is being touted as a solution to unemployment and social inequalities, it should not be viewed as a panacea for all problems.

Echoes of Past Leaders

In his letter, Sharma referenced the ideologies of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi to support his stance. He cited Indira Gandhi’s famous slogan “Na jaat par na paat par, mohar lagegi haath par” from 1980, underlining the importance of unity beyond caste and creed. Additionally, he mentioned Rajiv Gandhi’s stance against the politicization of casteism in parliamentary and assembly constituencies.

Party’s Direction and Rahul Gandhi’s Stand

The Congress, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, has been vocal about its commitment to conducting a caste census if elected in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This stance has been reiterated multiple times by Rahul Gandhi himself.

Party’s Election Strategy

Making the caste census a significant electoral promise, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge has emphasized the importance of assessing the socio-economic and political status of all communities through a nationwide exercise.

Call for Balance and Inclusivity

Sharma stressed the need for the Congress to uphold its inclusive approach and reclaim its role as a unifier in Indian politics. He urged the party to avoid radical posturing seen in some regional and caste-based organizations and instead focus on building a harmonious society.
