Armed Forces 11K officers short; posts of Major, Flight Lt going vacant

According to sources in the Defence Ministry, there is a shortage of more than 11,000 officers in the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy, with the Army making up more than half of that shortage.

The Defence Ministry reports that there is a dearth of officers with the ranks of Major and Captain. The Indian Air Force is equally short on important officers like the Squadron Leader and Flight Lieutenant. Similar to this, the Indian Navy falls short officers, particularly those with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

According to the Ministry of Defence, there were few officers hired during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is why there are these open positions.

According to the Defence Ministry, there has been a shortage of 11,266 Major and Captain and equivalent ranks and other rank officers in the Indian Air Force and Navy due to the poor officer recruitment during the Covid-19 period.

6,800 officer positions in the Indian Army are unfilled

More than 6,800 officer positions in the Indian Army are unfilled, the Ministry of Defence notified Parliament in writing. 2,094 Major-level officers and 4,734 Captain-level officers are needed by the Army. On the other hand, the Indian Air Force is short 940 Flight Lieutenants and 881 Squadron Leaders.

2,617 officers with the rank of Lieutenant Commander or lower are not currently on the Navy’s roster.

The appointment of officers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force was impacted by the pandemic, according to Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt.
