BBC sends mail to its employees asking them to cooperate with income tax officials

In response to surveys the Income Tax Department conducted at its Delhi and Mumbai offices, the BBC has sent an email to its staff. It has instructed its staff to assist tax officials and provide thorough answers to their inquiries.

BBC asks employees to cooperate with Income Tax Officials

The Mail stated,

“All employees to cooperate in the ongoing surveys’. All employees should support IT survey officials and answer their questions comprehensively.”

“Employees can refrain from answering questions on personal income if asked so. They should answer other salary-related queries.”

Mail further said that only those working in broadcast department should come to the office , while others may continue to work from home.

It read,

“Only the broadcast department to come to office, other employees to continue working from home,”

Allegations by Income Tax Department

The Income Tax Department while conducting surveys at Delhi and Mumbai offices of BBC alleged that

“deliberate non-compliance with transfer pricing rules and its vast diversion of profits”.

BBC statement stated,

“The Income Tax Authorities are currently at the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and we are fully cooperating. We hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible.”

Further BBC Tweeted,

“The Income Tax Authorities remain at the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai. Many staff have now left the building, but some have been asked to remain and are continuing to cooperate with the ongoing enquiries.”

“We are supporting our staff during this time and continue to hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible. Our output and journalism continues as normal and we are committed to serving our audiences in India,”

Only a few weeks have passed since the BBC aired a documentary on PM Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots before the I-T department took action. The government immediately banned the documentary, titled ” The Modi Question.”
