Rahul Gandhi: Rahul Gandhi, a former Member of Parliament (MP) and leader of the Congress, submitted an appeal on Thursday asking for a stay of the Magistrate court's judgement regarding his conviction in the criminal defamation case from 2019. After hearing the arguments from both parties, Judge Robin Mogera of the Surat Sessions Court made the decision to reserve his ruling, which will now be delivered on April 20.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from serving in the Parliament

Gandhi had already received a two-year prison sentence on March 23, when Chief Judicial Magistrate H.H. Varma in Surat found him guilty of violating IPC Sections 499 (Defamation) and 500 (Punishment for Defamation). Because Rahul is an MP, whatever he says will undoubtedly have a bigger influence, according to Judge Harish Hasmukhbhai Varma. He ought to have used restraint as a result. Gandhi was disqualified from serving in the Parliament as a result of his conviction under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), both of which carry a maximum punishment of two years.
