Delhi News: No Diwali Celebrations this year as govt puts ban on selling/burning firecrackers, details

As part of a pollution control strategy, the Delhi government made an announcement on Monday, imposing a prohibition on the production, sale, and ignition of firecrackers for the upcoming Diwali season.

Delhi News: On Monday, the Delhi government reintroduced a prohibition on the manufacturing, sale, storage, and use of any form of fireworks within the capital region for this year’s Diwali season. This decision is part of a strategy to mitigate pollution levels during the winter season, as stated by Environment Minister Gopal Rai.

Delhi govt bans firecrackers

Addressing a press conference in the national capital on Monday, Rai declared that the Delhi Police would receive stringent directives to enforce the ban across the city. This rule has been upheld by the Delhi government for the last three years. Additionally, he urged the authorities in the NCR states to abstain from issuing licenses for firecrackers.

He stated, “We have seen a considerable improvement in Delhi’s air quality in the last five-six years but we have to improve it further. Therefore, we have decided to ban firecrackers this year too.” Continuing further, he stated that everyone’s safety should be kept in mind, saying “Collective efforts are necessary to save lives. We Delhiites will celebrate Diwali with lights and lamps.”

Penalties and imprisonment

Furthermore, Rai mentioned that the authorities have initiated the surveillance of pollution hotspots, and they intend to put a winter action plan into action as Diwali approaches. Last year, the government had announced stringent penalties for those caught setting off fireworks during Diwali, including up to six months in jail and a fine of Rs 200.

Additionally, the government had issued a stern warning that the manufacturing, storage, and sale of fireworks within Delhi could lead to severe penalties, including a fine of up to Rs 5,000 and a three-year prison sentence as per Section 9B of the Explosives Act.
