Delhi Police has filed an FIR against Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi based on a complaint lodged by BJP MPs. The complaint alleges that Gandhi’s actions during a protest in Parliament led to injuries to BJP MPs.
While the FIR initially included multiple sections, Delhi Police clarified that Section 109 (abetment to commit an offense, including attempt to murder) was dropped after review. Other sections, including 115 (abetment of an offense punishable with death or imprisonment for life), 117 (abetment by a group of more than ten people), 125 (offense against unity), 131 (abetment of mutiny), and 351 (assault), remain in place.
BJP Leaders File Complaint Against Rahul Gandhi
Earlier in the day, BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Bansuri Swaraj, and Hemang Joshi lodged a formal complaint at the Parliament Street Police Station. The complaint accused Rahul Gandhi of pushing BJP MPs, which allegedly caused injuries during a heated protest.
In their statement, BJP MPs claimed that Gandhi’s actions amounted to physical assault and misconduct, demanding legal action. The BJP cited sections of the Indian Penal Code that address severe offenses, including incitement and endangerment of life.
Background: The Incident That Sparked Controversy
The controversy stems from an incident during a Parliament protest, where BJP MP Pratap Sarangi sustained injuries. BJP leaders alleged that Gandhi pushed another MP, causing a domino effect that led to Sarangi’s head injury. BJP MPs Hemang Joshi and Mukesh Rajput were also reportedly hurt during the altercation.
Rahul Gandhi, however, dismissed the allegations, accusing BJP MPs of blocking opposition leaders and engaging in aggressive behavior. He claimed the protests were peaceful and that the accusations were an attempt to distract from the real issues raised by the opposition.
