Pratap Sarangi: A dramatic incident unfolded in Parliament on Thursday, leaving BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi injured after a heated altercation during a protest led by Congress MPs against Home Minister Amit Shah's comments about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Sarangi alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had pushed another MP, causing them to fall on him, leading to a head injury. The altercation, which escalated to physical jostling, saw both BJP and INDIA alliance MPs protesting over their respective views on Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.

Following the incident, Sarangi was taken to RML Hospital, where Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Pralhad Joshi visited him and fellow BJP MP Mukesh Rajput, who also sustained injuries.

BJP Leaders Condemn Rahul Gandhi’s Actions

BJP leaders were quick to react to the incident, blaming Rahul Gandhi for the physical altercation. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya posted a video of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), where he accused Gandhi of causing Sarangi’s injury. Malviya captioned the post: "Odisha BJP MP Pratap Sarangi sustained injuries when Rahul Gandhi pushed another MP, causing him to fall on Sarangi. The sheer nonchalance and arrogance of Gandhi scion is for all to see. Congress leadership is now resorting to physical assaults."

BJP MP Giriraj Singh also expressed his outrage, telling PTI, "Rahul Gandhi wants to spread anarchy in the House. The incident that happened with MP Pratap Sarangi is condemnable. He was pushed, he fell, and fainted, isn't this hooliganism?"

Anurag Thakur, another prominent BJP leader, shared a clip of Rahul Gandhi addressing the media over the incident, accusing the Congress leader of downplaying the seriousness of his actions. Thakur wrote, "Rahul Gandhi himself is admitting that he has pushed, and is shamelessly saying that nothing is achieved by pushing. Due to his push, a senior MP's head got fractured, two MPs are admitted in hospital, and Rahul ji is saying that nothing happens due to push. Arrogance, tyranny, and dictatorship run in the veins of the Gandhi family… shameful."

Congress Leaders Respond

On the other hand, Congress leaders have countered the allegations, accusing BJP MPs of provocation and hostility. Supriya Shrinate took to X, claiming that the BJP was trying to divert attention from Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial comments. She wrote, "The drama created to save Amit Shah exposed. See who is marching peacefully to enter Parliament. Who else was bent on hooliganism? Why did BJP MPs block the way to enter the House? Why did BJP MPs manhandle Kharge ji, Priyanka ji, and women MPs?"

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who was also at the center of the protest, shared his own experience. He wrote on X, “My letter to the Hon’ble Lok Sabha Speaker urging to order an inquiry into the incident which is an assault not just on me personally, but on the Leader of the Opposition, Rajya Sabha, and the Congress President.”

Gaurav Gogoi, another Congress leader, condemned the BJP MPs' actions, claiming to have witnessed them threatening and pushing both Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Gogoi wrote, "Today I saw the BJP MPs being hostile and threatening towards Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and LOP Rahul Gandhi. The BJP MPs had sticks in their hands. I saw with my own eyes how Shri Mallikarjun Kharge was being threatened and pushed. This shows the mindset of the party. I condemn this arrogance."

Gogoi further raised concerns about security protocols at the Parliament steps, which he claimed were absent during the incident, thereby endangering MPs. He added, "INDIA MPs have protested often on the stairs but we have never been hostile towards other parties. We believe in non-violent agitation. Whenever INDIA alliance MPs are protesting on the stairs, there is a security cordon so that other MPs can walk up without any disturbance. Today the security cordon was absent despite two simultaneous protests. Why this double standard? Why put MPs at risk of injury? Does the BJP want provocation?"

Political Fallout and Calls for Inquiry

The physical altercation has led to a war of words between BJP and Congress, with both parties accusing each other of misusing the protest to further their political agenda. As the incident unfolds, questions about the security measures in Parliament and the conduct of MPs during protests remain at the forefront of political discourse. Calls for a formal inquiry into the event continue to mount, with the matter unlikely to be resolved soon.
