An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale hit Portblair in Andaman and Nicobar Island today morning at 5.57 am, National Center for Seismology (NCS) said on 5 July. No harm to life or damage to property has come to the fore yet.
The quake occurred at around 5.57 am, 215km ESE of Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar islands, said the National Center for Seismology
The quake took place at a depth of 44 kilometres from the bay. The epicentre of the 5.0 earthquake was 215km ESE of the capital, Port Blair. According to the National Center for Seismology, the first tremor hit the area around the islands at 5.18 pm on Monday. It was recorded to be at 4.6 on the Richter Scale. As the evening progressed, further tremors occurred, with most being around the 4.5-mark on the Richter Scale.
The strongest one, however, came on Tuesday morning. The National Center for Seismology recorded at least 24 tremors in the two days.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake’s epicenter.
