He said, "We are engaging the US government to ensure the returning deportees are not mistreated in any manner." His comments come in light of the growing number of deportations and the distress shared by Indian citizens who have been sent back to India.
The Role of ICE in Deportations
Dr. Jaishankar further explained the deportation process, clarifying that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities are responsible for organizing and executing the deportations.

He highlighted the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) followed by ICE, which have been in effect since 2012. According to these procedures, deportees are often restrained during the deportation process. However, Dr. Jaishankar noted, "We have been informed by ICE that women and children are not restrained."

While addressing the mistreatment of Indian deportees, Dr. Jaishankar also emphasised the importance of focusing on the broader issue of illegal immigration. He reiterated that, "It is the obligation of all countries to take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad."
