The one-day lockdown implemented by the state government to control the third wave of the Covid-19 epidemic in Kerala came into effect on Sunday and only emergency services were allowed to function during this period. To review the status of Covid-19, it was decided in a high-level meeting on Thursday that only emergency services should be approved on January 23 and 30. In the meeting, shops selling essential commodities like milk, newspapers, fish, meat, fruits, vegetables and grocery were allowed to open from 7 am to 9 pm on these two Sundays.

According to the decision, private vehicles will be banned during this period. According to the government, passengers who have to go to the airport or who have already booked tickets to go to tourist places, they will be allowed to travel by showing the necessary documents like tickets to the police officers posted at the check posts. Parcel service will be available only at hotels and drugstores and media and internet-telecom services will remain available irrespective of the restrictions.

On Saturday, 45,136 new cases of corona virus infection were reported in Kerala, after which the total cases increased to 55,74,702. The Health Department said that 1,00,735 samples were tested in the state in the last 24 hours and at present 2,47,227 patients of Covid are under treatment. Kerala recorded 132 deaths due to the pandemic, taking the death toll to 51,739. Of these 132 deaths, 70 occurred in the last few days while 62 were declared as COVID deaths after receiving an appeal based on the new guidelines of the Center and the direction of the Supreme Court. In a release issued by the Health Department, it was said that only three percent of the patients under treatment are hospitalized.

If we talk about the country, during the last 24 hours 3,33,533 new cases of corona virus infection were reported, taking the total number of people infected so far in the country to 3,92,37,264. The Union Health Ministry gave this information in the updated data on Sunday. According to the data, the number of patients under treatment in the country has increased to 21,87,205, while the total number of people who lost their lives due to the epidemic in India has reached 4,89,409 due to the death of 525 infected during the last 24 hours. At present, 5.57 percent of the total cases of infection found in the country are under treatment, while the recovery rate of patients is 93.18 percent.
