Gaganyaan Mission: The inaugural test for the Gaganyaan human space flight mission, known as the Test Vehicle D1 mission, was unexpectedly postponed mere seconds before its planned launch. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) did not disclose the reason for the delay but assured the vehicle’s safety.

Investigation to find cause

ISRO’s chief, S Somanath, stated that an investigation will find the cause of the engine ignition issue. This mission is a precursor to the Gaganyaan program, which aspires to send astronauts into a 400km Low Earth Orbit for a three-day mission before safely returning to Earth.

“Engine ignition has not happened in the nominal course. We have to find out what went wrong. The vehicle is safe, and we will announce the reason after an investigation,” ISRO chief S Somanath said.

Amined to evaluate efficacy

The postponed test aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the crew escape system, designed to evacuate astronauts in emergencies. Subsequently, another test flight, featuring a robot astronaut, will precede the final manned mission, which is scheduled for next year, as announced by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.

“Before the ultimate manned ‘Gaganyaan’ mission, there will be a test flight next year, which will carry Vyommitra, the female robot astronaut,” Union Minister Jitendra Singh said.
