Gujarat: Investigation Begins Against the Culprits of Public Flogging

Gujarat: Videos of the event show a group of guys in plainclothes lashing and restraint at least four persons who were being held against an electricity pole one after the other. These men have been recognised as police officers from the Gujarati district of Kheda’s Local Crime Branch (LCB).

Police officers confirmed this by identifying the individual seen spanking the men as Police Inspector A V Parmar. Sub Inspector D B Kumavat has been named as the guy who was seen removing the phones and wallets from the victims’ pockets. Calls and texts to Parmar and Kumavat, who are both assigned to the LCB unit in Kheda, went unanswered.

The authorities have not yet released the names of the people in the videos. Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Bhatia responded to a request for comment by saying, “We have initiated an inquiry into the policemen seen in the video. After the investigation, only then will action be taken.

The investigation has been handed to V N Solanki, Deputy Superintendent of Police for Kapadvanj Taluka. “Today, I received the investigation. I still need to examine the video clips’ specifics, he said.

A senior police official said when asked about Parmar and Kumavat: “We cannot deny that these are our personnel. They should not have taken the law in their hands.”

According to sources, seven members of the LCB unit are the subject of an inquiry. “The officers will be subject to the first disciplinary action upon the submission of the primary investigative report. They’ll be required to submit their version, the officer stated.

The video footage, which surfaced on Tuesday, showed at least four guys being lathi-flogged by a man with a holstered revolver on his belt while being held one after another against an electricity pole at a chowk by a gang of men in plainclothes. Before being instructed to enter a nearby police vehicle by the guys in plainclothes, those who had been flogged can then be seen folding their hands in front of an applauding audience.

The incident allegedly happened following stone-throwing during a garba celebration on Monday night in Gujarat’s Undhela hamlet of Matar taluka in Kheda district.

The FIR lodged in connection with the alleged stone-pelting is being looked into by the Special Operations Group (SOG), Kheda. “We are investigating the data. Teams are searching for the other suspects. We would respond appropriately if we suspect that the event was planned, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police V. R. Bajpayee of Nadiad.

On Wednesday, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said that the attempt to disturb peace in the area was made by “some anti-social gang from the hamlet” and “not any community.”
