A man was arrested by Customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport on Thursday with several watches worth crores of rupees. Giving information, the officials said that a person has been arrested for smuggling seven luxury wrist watches. According to officials, one of the watches recovered from the arrested youth is made of gold, with diamonds studded on it and its value is Rs 27.09 crore. IGI Customs Commissioner Zubair Riaz Kamili said that this is the biggest seizure of commercial or luxury goods in terms of value.
In terms of value, it is equivalent to seizing 60 kg of gold at one go, he said. An official statement said that the accused passenger, who arrived here from Dubai on Tuesday, was stopped by the officials of the Customs Department. The accused is an Indian citizen. Seven wrist watches were recovered during a detailed examination and personal search of his belongings, the statement said.
These watches – Jacob & Co (Model: BL115.30A), Piaget Limelight Stella (SI.No.1250352 P11179), Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Just (SI.No.Z7J12418), Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Just (SI.No. 0C46G2 17), Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Just (SI. No. 237Q 5385) and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Just (SI.No.86 1R9269).
Officials said that the cost of one watch of Jacob & Co alone is Rs 27.09 crore. A statement issued by Delhi Customs said that apart from these watches, a diamond studded gold bracelet with a total value of Rs 28.17 crore and an iPhone 14 Pro 256 GB were also recovered from the passenger.
The passenger has been arrested after confiscating the watches. A senior official of the Customs Department said that the accused traveler and his uncle have a showroom of expensive watches in Dubai, which has branches at other places in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
