IIT-Kharagpur Student Murder Case: In the midst of continuous student protests against the institute's "lackadaisical" response to the murder of third-year mechanical engineering student Faizan Ahmed, the dean of student relations at IIT-Kharagpur has resigned from his position.

Sources claim that Dhrubajyoti Sen left her position on October 19, but the students learned of the resignation at an open house that IIT Director V K Tiwari organised on Friday.

Students demand resignation:

According to sources, several of the students present at the open house session chanted epithets against the director and requested his resignation over the way in which the situation was handled in the wake of the student's passing.

But while people were yelling slogans, the director became ill and was taken to the hospital.

On Saturday morning, the director was checked into a hospital in Kolkata. He is stable, Tamal Nath, IIT-registrar, Kharagpur's told reporters.

Faizan's mother Rehana Ahmed reportedly wrote to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday, stating that her son had been "murdered." Also sending a copy of the letter to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam.

Who was Faizan?

On October 14, Faizan's partially-composed body was discovered in his dorm room. Faizan was an Assamese native from the Tinsukia district in Assam. His parents requested an investigation into his passing in a case they filed with the local Kharagpur police in the Paschim Medinipur district. The Assam CM, on the other hand, asked for a thorough probe into the incident in a letter to her West Bengali colleague Mamata Banerjee.

Amit Patra, the Deputy Director of IIT-Kharagpur, then apologised and accepted responsibility for the "lapses that happened in the handling of the matter."

Authorities at IIT-Kharagpur have in the meantime assembled a committee to look into the "lapses."
