Independence Day 2020: PM Modi extends wishes ahead of speech at Red Fort

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday wished all the countrymen on the occasion of 74th Independence Day before hoisting the tricolour from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi.

“Happy Independence Day to all fellow Indians. Jai Hind!” PM Modi posted on Twitter minutes before his speech at the Red Fort.

He will soon be delivering the customary address to the nation from the ramparts of the iconic monument, Red Fort. Before that, he will receive the Guard of Honour contingent, consisting of one officer and 24 men each from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Delhi Police.

The event at the Red Fort will be relatively different than the ideal in the wake of coronavirus pandemic which has infected over 2 million people in the country. Instead of general public and school children, 1,500 corona warriors, including 500 police personnel have been invited to the event.

The Home Ministry in its advisory has asked states to avoid large social gathering and instead webcast the celebration.
