India Refuses to Sign China’s Belt and Road Initiative Accord at SCO Summit, Report

SCO Summit: India, the only country at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting to decline to sign an accord supporting China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, did so once more. India was the only member nation to publicly support China’s BRI. Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan reiterated their support for the BRI in the statement released at the conclusion of the summit, which was hosted by India.

SCO Member States Reaffirm Support for Belt and Road Initiative

“Reaffirming their support for China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) initiative, the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Russian Federation, Republic of Tajikistan, and Republic of Uzbekistan note the ongoing work to jointly implement this project, including efforts to link the construction of the Eurasian Economic Union and BRI,” it read. The SCO Economic Development Strategy 2030, which “interested member states” had adopted, as well as projects aimed at fostering cooperation in a number of areas, including the digital economy, finance, energy, and food security, as well as the modernization of current international rail and road routes, were also cited as being important in the declaration.

PM Modi Emphasizes Sovereignty and Connectivity in Opening Remarks

Earlier, in his opening remarks at the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that it is crucial to protect the fundamental tenets of the SCO charter, particularly the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member nations, while working to increase connectivity. Chinese President Xi Jinping, his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and other group leaders were present at the meeting, which was presided over by PM Modi.
