India’s ‘Operation Kaveri’ rescues 1100 Indians from war-torn Sudan

Sudan Crisis: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday that India is in contact with all parties in Sudan to secure the safety of Indians stuck in the war-torn African country. India has evacuated about 1,100 individuals from Sudan so far as part of ‘Operation Kaveri,’ and plans to rescue more of its residents before the precarious ceasefire between the regular army and a paramilitary force expires.

1100 Indian Evacuated from Sudan under

Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi Tweeted, “The 4th IAF C-130J flight takes off from Port Sudan for Jeddah with 128 passengers. This is the sixth batch of Indians to be evacuated from Sudan under #OperationKaveri, taking the total to nearly 1100 persons.” After this Another 246 Indians landed in Mumbai on Thursday as part of Operation Kaveri, according to Foreign Minister S Jaishakar, who also tweeted images of the arrival. “Another #OperationKaveri flight has arrived in Mumbai.” “246 more Indians return to their homeland,” Jaishankar stated. The first group of 360 Indians from Sudan landed in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Following hostilities between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the government launched Operation Kaveri, an evacuation mission for Indian citizens trapped in Sudan. India is transporting the evacuees to the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, from whence they will return home. People sang ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ ‘Indian Army Zindabad,’ and ‘PM Narendra Modi Zindabad’ as the plane touched down in Delhi. ‘Several ceasefires have been announced, some not respected, others partially,’ Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said. ‘The situation on the ground is still fragile…Outside of Khartoum, it is difficult to gain access,’ he added. “Our priority has been to move Indians from conflict zones to safer areas as soon as possible and then return them home,” the foreign secretary added.
