Israel Palestine Conflict: Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Criticises Global Muslim Response to Israel-Palestine, Appeals to PM Modi for Action

Israel Palestine Conflict

Israel Palestine Conflict: On Friday, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, criticised the Muslim community for failing to uphold its obligations in the Israel-Palestine conflict. In order to stop the conflict, the Shahi Imam also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put diplomatic pressure on Israel.

Two-State Theory Advocacy

Bukhari said in a statement that the “two-state theory”-based relevant resolutions of the UN, Arab League, and Gulf Cooperation Council support the idea that the Palestinian issue has reached a point where a quick and lasting resolution should be found, according to news agency PTI. “The Muslim world has not lived up to its responsibilities in this regard and is not doing what it should and this is very unfortunate. In the end I hope that the prime minister of my country shall, by virtue of his personal relations with the prime minister of Israel, exert diplomatic pressure to put an end to the war and resolve issues,” he said as quoted by PTI.

Human Toll in Israel-Palestine Conflict

More than 21,300 Palestinians have already lost their lives in the conflict, and a quarter of Gaza’s population is currently starving as a result of the humanitarian crisis. India supported a draft resolution earlier this month in the UN General Assembly that called for the unconditional release of all hostages and an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. 153 countries, including India, voted in favour of the resolution, while 10 countries, including the US, Israel, and Austria, voted against it. 23 other nations abstained from voting, including Germany, Argentina, and the Ukraine.

MEA’s Peaceful Diplomacy

The Ministry of External Affairs promoted the restart of direct talks for a peaceful settlement between the two states earlier in October. While releasing a statement, MEA had said, “Our policy in this regard has been long-standing and consistent. India has always advocated the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine living within secure and recognized borders, side by side at peace with Israel.” Following Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel, Israel has pledged to destroy the organisation and free the more than 100 hostages that the militants are still holding. The majority of the 1,200 people killed in the attack were civilians.
