DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) , said on Friday that the selection of judges would be made more public. According to DY Chandrachud, objective criteria would be established for the appointment of judges to the high courts and the Supreme Court.
The CJI stated that the centre for planning and research has started developing a comprehensive platform to evaluate the nation’s top judges who are qualified for the appointments.
He continued by saying that the evaluation would be based on information about judges and the verdicts they had issued.
According to DY Chandrachud, the top 50 judges in the nation would be evaluated for appointments to the Supreme Court and high courts, and a dossier with objective criteria will be created.
In the Supreme Court Collegium, “judges appoint judges” in a “closed-door system” that has drawn criticism. The Collegium system, which has been in place for three decades, has come under fire for not being sufficiently open and accountable.
Former Attorney General and eminent lawyer Mukul Rohatgi has called for an overhaul of the Collegium system, claiming that it is out of sync with how judges are appointed to the Supreme Court and high courts.
No institution in a democracy is perfect to the nth degree, according to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. He continued by saying that “working within the existing system” is the answer for the collegium system.
