Manipur Violence: Internet services suspended for 5 days following protests in Imphal

Manipur Violence: Following a clash between police and students on Tuesday in Imphal, the Manipur government once more imposed a five-day ban on internet services. According to officials, the students were protesting the suspected kidnapping and murder of two youngsters, which resulted in the injury of 45 pupils, including numerous girls.

The state administration proclaimed in a declaration that all mobile internet data services and internet/data services through VPN are suspended inside the boundaries of Manipur, effective immediately and lasting until 7:45 p.m. on October 1, 2023.

Meiti Vs Kuki:

Since May of this year, the Meiti majority and the Kuki minority have been engaged in ethnic warfare in Manipur. On April 28, the internet shutdown was limited to the Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts, and on May 3, it was extended to the entire state.

N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, declared the complete restoration of internet services in the state on Saturday.

Mobile internet services were still banned in July, while broadband services were allowed to resume in Manipur with restrictions and a user commitment.

Two Manipuri students went missing

Two Manipuri students went missing on July 6, and on Tuesday, unsettling pictures of them appeared online. The two kids were shown in one photograph sitting in a grassy area with two armed men standing behind them, while another picture that went viral on social media revealed their dead bodies. Hijam Linthoingambi, who was 17 years old, and Phijam Hemjit, who was 20 years old, were the casualties.

N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, offered to take fast action against those guilty for the students’ kidnapping and death in response to these photographs. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been given the case.

More than 160 people have died and hundreds more have been hurt since the violence broke out on May 3 during a “Tribal Solidarity March” opposing the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation.

The majority of the Meiteis, who make up around 53% of the state’s population, live in the Imphal Valley, while tribal tribes like the Nagas and Kukis, who make up 40% of the population, are concentrated in the hill districts.
