Minor’s death in Bengal: Police say girl died of poisonous substance, prime accused arrested

Minor’s death in Bengal: The preliminary post-mortem report of the minor girl found dead in North Dinajpur district revealed that she died due to some poisonous substance.  Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Sana Akhtar told mediapersons the body bore no injury marks. Police further said that the prime accused in the case was a 20-year-old man and has been arrested.

“Victim’s post-mortem report given by doctors reveals that death was due to a poisonous substance. No major injury. We will again ask doctors to clarify if there’s any sexual injury,” said the SP said. He further said, “We are investigating the case from all angles.”

The 17-year-old girl, whose body was found in a canal in Kaliaganj police station area on Friday, knew the man, police further said.

Police filed a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act based on the complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, the SP said.

‘BJP misleading people’

Meanwhile, Minister of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare of West Bengal, Shashi Panja accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misleading people and playing divisive politics over the matter.

“Why would police hide anything? BJP doesn’t care if a girl has died and that she must get justice. Two people have already been arrested. Investigation is underway. They are misleading people, and doing divisive politics. We condemn this. BJP is using this matter for their own publicity. They came with press deliberately,” said the Trinamool Congress minister.

Violence erupts in Bengal

Fresh violence erupted in Kaliaganj as locals staged protests against the incident on Saturday. Police resorted to teargas and lathicharge to bring the situation under control, reports said.

An agitated mob set several shops and e-rickshaws on fire. They demanded the arrest of those behind the incident. Protesters also blocked roads and hurled stones at the police reports said.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) had to be deployed to bring the situation under control, police said. A few protestors were also detained.

BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar staged a dharna outside the SP office in Raiganj. He was demanding justice for the girl’s family. He also demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
