Opposition bloc INDIA in Manipur, BJP calls it ‘mere show off’

Manipur Violence: The Opposition bloc, also known unitedly as I.N.D.I.A., Saturday landed in the strife-torn Manipur. A delegation of 20 MP has embarked on a two-day visit to the north-eastern state in the wake of the ongoing clashes that have claimed over 100 lives and displaced over 1000 citizens. The BJP has slammed the latest move of the Opposition, terming it a ‘mere show off’. Meanwhile, the delegation of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance submitted a memorandum to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey today, requesting her to restore peace & harmony, taking all effective measures.

“You are also requested to apprise the Union Government of the complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur for the last 89 days so as to enable them to intervene in the precarious situation in Manipur to restore peace and normalcy,” the memorandum reads.

The delegation of 21 MPs include includes Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, Sushmita Dev of the Trinamool, DMK’s Kanimozhi, RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha, and JDU chief Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, among others.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told reporters after visiting a relief camp, “They are talking of investigation by CBI (into the crimes committed)… I would like to ask were they (central government) sleeping till now?” 

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have led an all-party delegation to the rift-ridden state.

“We have always said that if the Prime Minister wants to lead an all-party delegation, we would be happy to be a part of it. In the end, we want peace to be established. Political parties from West Bengal, Jharkhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu to have a dialogue with the people and we want their concerns to be presented in Parliament”

BJP hits out at Opposition

The BJP has hit out at the Opposition, calling their visit “a photo session” and “political tourism”. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal accused the MPs from the INDIA bloc of politicising the issue.”We are ready for discussion in Parliament. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union HM Amit Shah have also said that we want to have discussions on this (Manipur) issue, but they (Opposition) are trying to politicise the issue. This should not be done,” said Meghwal.
