Prophet Remarks Row: Curfew imposed in Ranchi’s main road area after protest

Tensions ran high in Jharkhand after protests broke out in the capital city of Ranchi over the comments made by Nupur Sharma on Prophet Muhammad, and violent clashes between the police and the protesting mob broke out in the city.

Deputy Commissioner, Ranchi, said that curfew will be imposed in the city’s main road area.

According to the officials, several policemen were injured here on Friday while trying to control an irate mob near Hanuman Temple, situated on Ranchi’s Main Road, after protests erupted with hundreds of people demanding the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Police fired in air besides resorted to lathi-charge to control the mob which spilled out on the road after Friday prayers and pelted stones and shouted slogans.

“Few policemen have been injured. We are looking into the situation. We are reinforcing deployment,” a senior police official told news agency PTI.

DIG Ranchi Anish Gupta said the situation is tense but it is under control. “We are making all efforts from our end. Heavy security deployment done. Senior officials are also present at the spot. We are making all efforts to see that the crowd is dispersed from here,” he added.

Meanwhile, massive protests over the Prophet remarks row have erupted in other parts of the country as well – including Delhi, Kolkata and Prayagraj.

In Delhi, a protest erupted outside Jama Masjid after the Friday prayers with demands for the arrest of Nupur Sharma. On the other hand, over 300 people turned up during namaaz with posters demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma in Kolkata.

Not just in India, but the remarks of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma attracted international condemnation with protests from countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iran.
