Rahul Gandhi: Rahul Gandhi, a former president of the Congress, was found guilty by Surat’s sessions court for making a divisive comment about the “Modi surname.” After being found guilty of criminal defamation, the court sentenced him to two years in prison. However, the judge gave Rahul bail while keeping his punishment deferred for 30 days. He now has the opportunity to address the higher court. Rahul Gandhi responded, “As a leader, I fulfilled my job,” when the judge asked him for his view following the verdict in the court. Rahul, a Wayanad-based MP from Kerala, similarly declined to apologies.
Controversial remark was made during a rally in Kolar
Purnesh Modi, a former minister and member of the BJP, made the accusation that Rahul Gandhi said, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” The complaint said that the controversial remark was made during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and that it defamed the whole Modi community.
Congress support for Rahul Gandhi
The Congress posted posters on Thursday showing support for Rahul Gandhi. Once the Congress MP arrived for the court sessions, the posters were set up outside the Surat Court. The banners read, “Let’s go to Surat in support of democracy,” and featured photographs of Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev.
