A honeymoon trip to Meghalaya turned into a cold-blooded murder. Raja Raghuwanshi, a newlywed from Indore, was killed just days after tying the knot. His wife, Sonam, has confessed to planning the murder along with her lover and a group of contract killers.

Shillong DIG confirmed that the murder happened on May 23. While returning to their homestay, Raja and Sonam met three men. These men weren’t random strangers, but hired killers. Sonam convinced Raja to go for a photo shoot at another location. It was there that Raja was murdered. Police say Sonam also helped dispose of his body. What made them suspicious was her mangalsutra was found in a bag at the crime scene. Police found it suspicious as a newlywed won’t remove it.

Sonam Raghuwanshi Admits Killing Raja Raghuwanshi

After the murder, Sonam and her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha rode back with the killers on two scooters. Raj then arranged a car to take Sonam to Ghazipur. She stopped at a roadside dhaba and tried to change her version of the story to mislead the police. But her plan didn’t hold up for long.

Soon, an old photo of Sonam with Raj started circulating online. The two had a relationship even before her marriage. When the Special Investigation Team (SIT) confronted her with proof, Sonam broke down. During interrogation, she confessed to plotting the murder with Raj, Vishal, Anand and Akash.

The couple’s wedding took place on May 11. By May 20, they were off to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. On June 2, Raja’s body was found in a gorge near a waterfall in Sohra, East Khasi Hills.

Killers Planned Escape To Nepal If Things Went Wrong

As per the Indore Crime Branch, Sonam had started planning the murder just four days after her wedding. She stayed in touch with Raj over calls and mapped out the plan step-by-step. She convinced Raja to visit the Kamakhya temple, using it as bait to get him to the northeast.

Throughout the trip, she emotionally manipulated Raja Raghuwanshi. If the hired killers failed, her backup plan was to push him off a cliff during a photo moment. The group had also talked about escaping to Nepal if things went wrong.

All five accused (Sonam, Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand) are now in police custody. Investigators will seek a 10-day remand to continue questioning and may reconstruct the entire crime scene.
