A shocking turn has come up in the Raja Raghuwanshi murder case. Sonam Raghuwanshi, accused of plotting her husband’s killing, made more than 100 phone calls to a man named “Sanjay Verma” before and after marrying Raja. But police have now revealed that Sanjay Verma was never real.
Investigators say the name was fake. The person behind it was Raj Kushwaha, Sonam’s boyfriend and the man who allegedly planned Raja’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
‘Sanjay Verma’ Was A Cover Used By Mastermind
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told PTI, “We have discovered that Sonam made over 100 phone calls to one Sanjay Verma before her marriage to Raja. The calls continued even after the wedding.”
Police first began a search in Indore to find Verma, whose phone had been switched off. But later, they learned that Verma was actually Raj Kushwaha, the same man accused of hiring three hitmen to murder Raja.
The murder took place in Sohra, Meghalaya, just days after Raja and Sonam arrived there for their honeymoon in May. Raja’s decomposed body was found on June 2, nearly ten days after he was reported missing.
Financial Angle In Raja Raghuwanshi’s Murder
What started as a suspected love triangle may have more to it. Police are now checking if there was also a financial motive behind the crime. SP Syiem said, “Our team is in Indore and are questioning a few people to find out if somebody has to gain from Raja's death.”
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been sent to dig deeper into the financial links between Sonam, Raj, and the murder. Raj Kushwaha reportedly worked for a company owned by Sonam’s family, raising further suspicion.
SP Rituraj Ravi added that this wasn’t a one-time act. “The earlier attempts were made in Guwahati, Nongriat, and near Weisawdong Falls,” he said, confirming that three failed attempts were made before the final attack on May 23.
Sonam Fled But Left Behind Clues
After Raja’s death, Sonam disappeared. She travelled through Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh before landing back in Indore. But her mangalsutra and wedding ring, left behind in a trolley bag at a Sohra homestay, raised red flags.
All five accused, including Sonam and the three hitmen, are now in police custody. Police recreated the crime scene on Tuesday to trace the exact steps in the murder.
Sonam’s brother, Govind, also spoke to the media. He said, “I don’t know anything about Sanjay Verma. I also learned today that Sanjay’s name is coming up.”
