What began as a honeymoon ended in a horrifying murder. The killing of Indore man Raja Raghuwanshi has exposed a twisted and disturbing plan. His wife, Sonam, and her lover Raj Kushwaha allegedly first tried to fake her death before resorting to killing Raja during their honeymoon trip to Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Police said the plan was months in the making. Their first idea was to burn an unrecognisable body and pass it off as Sonam’s. But when the plan failed, the couple shifted focus to Raja. They allegedly plotted his murder instead.

Raja Raghuwanshi Murder Case: A Fake Death Plot That Turned Deadly

East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said, “The main mastermind is Raj. Sonam played along and was part of the plan.” The pair had been planning this since February. Police say they even considered faking Sonam’s drowning in a river. Another plan was to murder someone else and claim it was Sonam’s burnt body.

When none of these ideas worked, they chose the most brutal route. Raj roped in three men from Indore (two of his friends and a cousin) to carry out the killing. The men followed Raja and Sonam from Guwahati to Meghalaya and made three failed attempts before finally attacking. The murder took place at a remote location near Weisawdong. Raja was hacked to death, and his body was dumped into a gorge.

Syiemk said, “These men weren’t professional killers. They were doing a favour for Raj.”

How They Tried To Escape After Murder But Failed

After Raja’s death, Sonam helped hide the evidence. She handed over her raincoat to one of the attackers to replace his blood-stained shirt. Then came her dramatic escape. Raj had planned every step. He arranged a burkha. She left Meghalaya in a taxi, travelled to Siliguri by bus, moved through Patna and Lucknow, and finally reached Indore.

DIG Davis Marak said, “Sonam is displaying remorse, but whether it is genuine or an act is yet to be determined.” She later surrendered in Uttar Pradesh and was handed over to Meghalaya Police.

Meanwhile, Raj Kushwaha and his three aides (Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi) have been arrested. Even after the murder, Raj had a backup plan. When he feared the men might be caught, he told Sonam to lie. She phoned her family and claimed she had escaped an abduction.

But police say the web of lies started to fall apart as soon as arrests began. Now, both Raj and Sonam are blaming each other for the conspiracy that ended Raja’s life.
