Rajasthan News: A panchayat in Jalore district of Rajasthan has banned the use of smartphones with cameras for daughters-in-law and unmarried girls of the community across 15 villages. The ban will come into effect from January 26 to curtail excessive use of mobile phones by children.

Panch Himmataram read out the proposal during the meeting held on Sunday in Gazipur village of the Sundhamata Patti area.

What Is Making This Rajasthan News in Circulation?

Under the new rule, women will not be allowed to carry smartphones at social functions, weddings, public gatherings or even while visiting the houses of neighbours. Furthermore, they have been asked to simply use basic keypad mobile phones for communication.

The restriction also extends beyond public spaces. However, the panchayat has made a partial exception for school- and college-going girls. But, carrying mobile phones outside the house, even for academic reasons, has been prohibited.

Community president Sujanaram Choudhary remarked the rule was introduced because of concerns over the excessive use of mobile phones by children. Choudhary added the restriction is a necessary step taken in the interest of children’s health. He said children tend to use mobile phones frequently when women carry smartphones.

The decision has sparked a debate within and outside the community with people questioning its impact on women’s freedom, education and access to technology.

Where Will The Ban Be Implemented?

The ban will be implemented in villages including Gazipura, Pavli, Kalda, Manojiya Vas, Rajikavas, Datalavas, Rajpura, Kodi, Sidrodi, Aladi, Ropsi, Khanadeval, Savdhar, Hathmi ki Dhani of Bhinmal, and Khanpur.

Jalore is not new to controversies. Last year, a special boycott of two families was ordered by local elders after a young couple entered into a love marriage, imposing a fine of ₹12 lakh for their re-entry into the community. Later, police intervened and a compromise was facilitated.
