Rajnath Singh Slams Opposition, Calls for Uniform Civil Code as Integral to India’s Constitution

Rajnath Singh

Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, stated on Monday that the Opposition is exaggerating the problem by labelling the Uniform Civil Code “vote bank politics” and that it is a component of the Directive Principles of the Indian Constitution. Singh responded after opposition parties last week criticised the Law Commission for asking for opinions on the UCC from the general population and religious organisations.

Rajnath Singh Defends Uniform Civil Code and Calls for Unity in Nation-building

Singh was speaking to a crowd in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, to commemorate the conclusion of the nine-year tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration at the Centre. “An essential component of our nation’s Directive Principles is the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Why are they debating it? Goa, Madhya Pradesh, has it already in place. I applaud Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami Ji for taking the lead in this way,” he said, adding that the Law Commission now hears from people all over the nation. He attacked the opposition, claiming that “they are exaggerating the problem by calling it vote bank politics.” He remarked, in a direct address to the opposition, “Politics should not be done for the sake of forming a government, it should be done for building a society and a nation.” “Muslims, Christians, and Hindus are all brothers. Many Muslims vote for us as well, but some of them are just being deceitful. The defence minister advised avoiding these individuals. “Whatever is done, we will create social peace here,” he continued. “We want social peace here.”
